When the Getting Was Good

September 10 2010

J.P. Morgan Alum and 85 Broads Power Circle Member, Susan G. Bell, recently published her first novel, When the Getting Was Good, which tells the story of Kate Munro, a trader on Wall Street who is implicated in a trading practices scandal and must fight to clear her name and save her job.

The first woman promoted to managing director at J. P. Morgan Securities, Susan Bell wrote the book to articulate a woman’s perspective on a fascinating period in American business history, one usually described by men.

“Though my novel is informed by my experiences on Wall Street, the narrative is fiction and a product of my imagination. My goal was to create a story that was authentic to that period and also emotionally true. I’m happy when my book resonates with readers who worked on Wall Street in the ‘80s, or intrigues those unfamiliar with that world.”

David W. Fisher, founding president of J. P. Morgan Securities, says that Bell has produced a “highly accurate portrayal of the Wall Street trading room mentality of the ‘80s and a most enjoyable read.”

Janet Hanson, who knows that period well, agrees. “When the Getting Was Good is a must-read for ambitious, intellectually savvy women everywhere. Susan Bell’s novel speaks to the power of defining success on your own terms. I highly recommend it!”
