World Ocean Day 2010

June 8 2010

Hello and Happy World Ocean Day!

In commemoration of Jacques Cousteau’s 100th birthday this Friday, his eldest grandson, Fabien Cousteau [fabiencousteau.org], yesterday launched a new nonprofit, Plant A Fish [plantafish.org], in New York’s Hudson River. Choosing his own “backyard” as the starting location, Fabien, along with several UA New York Harbor School students “replanted” oysters under the harbor. Diving beneath the swirling green waves, they spent at least 45 minutes managing their task and it appears only Fabien was distracted by two Horseshoe crabs copulating nearby the oyster site!

Following the dive, our friend Murray, rushed us by smaller boat across the river so that we would not miss our 2 pm train to Washington DC, where there was a Plant A Fish fund-raiser starting at 6 pm. Yes, Fabien stripped off his wetsuit while zooming along on the small speed boat, so that he didn’t have to walk into Penn Station looking like AquaMan!!

Upon arrival in DC, he “disinfected” himself from the river goo, and off we zoomed to the evening’s festivities held at the stunning home of a well-known Washington DC business leader. Over 125 attended including dear old friends, press from the Washington Post, Washington Life Magazine, The Hill, Roll Call and more. Thanks to the amazing group serving on our host committee, the evening was a stellar success.

Below are two clips to share, along with a casual pic from the press conference. Watch for more significant articles including the piece in today’s Wall Street Journal and when time permits, please visit the Plant A Fish website [plantafish.org].

Thanks to everyone for their support, generosity and friendship. He could not do this without your assistance, and although we are all disheartened by the tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico, we must try to forge ahead by helping our local bodies of water and restoring necessary sea life.

With love and appreciation,

Susan
