Young Women Of Influence Evening Speaker Series: Catharine Fennell

December 1 2010

Scotiabank sponsored another great Young Women Of Influence Evening Speaker Series event. Despite a rainy evening, the talk at The Roosevelt Room attracted a dynamic crowd of innovative, enterprising women, a thought-provoking speaker and plenty of opportunities for seamless networking!

Catharine Fennell, CEO & Founder of VideoBio, was the keynote speaker and she delivered a short but valuable content-packed speech. Her two key pieces of advice were the importance of maintaining a top reputation and building a fan base.

She also shared her top ten tips for women entrepreneurs:

1) Entrepreneurship is a race so move quickly.

2) Pursue excellence and don’t ever settle.

3) Find early adopters and thank your fans.

4) Just because you are the only person doing something a certain way doesn’t mean you are doing it wrong.

5) Outliers – benefits of sitting on the periphery.

6) Execution is everything – need to take it beyond the idea.

7) Never give up when the going gets tough because the going gets tough all the time.

8) Keep your eyes wide open.

9) Have great cheerleaders in your circle of friends.

10) Love what you do and tell everyone about it. Promote yourself unapologetically.

Fennell’s speech was followed by a very successful networking exercise with the purpose of finding and building one’s circle of cheerleading friends for one’s professional life.

Women of Influence President Carolyn Lawrence was very pleased by the congenial atmosphere of the evening and stated many people had particularly enjoyed Fennell’s talk. Renee Heinemann, Marketing Coordinator for Women of Influence, added, “It’s inspiring to see so many like-minded young entrepreneurs connecting with each other and sharing resources.”

Careergo and Quest (Centre for Reproductive Medicine) had stalls. Lawrence herself is planning to become a Quest client this winter.

Sponsors like National Post, Sherway Gardens, and many more, had gifted great door prizes and all attendees received some pretty impressive swag when they left this valuable event. One particular swag that was noteworthy was a Scotiabank Group IPOD style Micromint case. Very cute.
