Entrepreneur Broads meet to chat in NYC
October 17 2010
These days the word "entrepreneur" immediately conjures up images of a geeky tech/hipster dude who invented yet another way to tap into the social graph. Supported and shaped by the media, this portrait of the modern day entrepreneur is uncompromisingly rigid and misses a whole host of fabulously creative people who are bootstrapping it to success.
Being in tech myself (www.NabeWise.com), I'm sad to say that I too sometimes forget that entrepreneurship does not revolve around the social web.
Case in point: A small group of entrepreneurs within 85 Broads met at the exclusive Press Lounge in NYC to share ideas and get to know each other this past Tuesday, October 12. While meeting passionate entrepreneurs is always energizing, this particular group was so inspiring and diverse that a mere blog post is not enough to do these women justice.
First up, Kira Zmuda, my co-organizer and a passionate free spirit, who is not only a fierce writer for the Examiner.com and The Grace List (http://www.thegracelist.com/), but also an Action Architect at HOLLAback (http://www.ihollaback.org/) and the Creator of The Mathematics of Glamour (http://themathematicsofglamour.com/). Phew! Fierce! Need I say more?
Next up, Patricia Brett, a BRCA1+ pre-vivor, mom, and founder and designer of Veronica Brett (www.veronicabrett.com). A former architect, Patricia turned a family tragedy into a passionate business of designing a luxury collection of swimwear for breast cancer survivors, pre-vivors and anyone who just wants to look great in a swimsuit again! Being featured in Oprah Magazine is just the beginning; this one is going all the way.
Denise Gillen, the founder of Doggy Guest House (http://www.doggyguesthouse.com/). A dog lover her whole life, Denise got her first dog at the age of 20 and that was the beginning of what became a lifelong love affair with dogs. Denise has shared her home and her heart with many of them over the years – and she remembers all their names!
The very creative, Lara Bezich, Founder and Chief Creator of the Muvo Box. Muvo is the first furniture company that focuses on products for people who move a lot. Muvo's first product is Muvo Box, a lightweight and durable box that double functions as moving box and modular furniture. It truly is an ingenious creation.
All these women are an inspiration, and I'm humbled to meet each and every one of you.
