Snowy Day: Debunking Work Life Balance Myth
February 10 2010
When women ask me, "how do you balance it all...business, clients, public speaking, 2 preteens, husband etc." I usually say "I DON'T!!! It's always messy !And anyone who says they are " balancing" is liar!" Anyone who knows me knows I usually don't mince words. Life's too short not to speak the truth!
So..while I'm snowed in with "everyone" home, trying to reschedule clients, and diplomatically, fielding periodic well-disguised distractions by very cute people that all amount to " Hey..you, the woman on the phone and keyboard! I'm bored, please pay attention to me!!" I am really struck by how messy my life and work can be.
So in the interest of leveling the playing field between all women who want it all here is the debunked myth of "life work balance" in all its graphic ugly detail:
In the last 1o minutes...
1) I have a 13 year old who has asked me 10 times to order "The Hangover" on pay per view; (the answer has been No since 9 am.)
2) A client call to be handled in 15 minutes which includes a resume review and cover letter review that needs to now be targeted to the German marketplace;
3) A 10 year old who cannot find her snow pants and has turned over every closet in the house;
4) An oven that does not work--which makes my suggestion: "hey why don't you guys make cookies!?" now moot;
5) a workshop proposal due by the end of the week; and
6) a full roster of client calls to be rescheduled as the phone lines have been down and moody...because of the snow.
Bottom Line: Life-Work Balance...is a myth. There is Life. There is Work. And if you are doing either one of them at full throttle...you will find that they are each messy and unpredictable as independent variables....so why would we ever think that trying to merge them would be any less messy?...
