Amused that writing my first “networking like a pro” blog for Pretty Young Professional is, frankly, producing as much angst as well…networking. What is it about Networking?
Maybe it’s the definition. Merriam Webster defines “networking” as “the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions” (oh, now that’s enticing). The definition continues “specifically: the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business” (what? work requires showing up on time, producing good work AND the making of productive relationships too????). The definition of “net” offers much more inspiration: An openwork fabric made of threads or cords that are woven or knotted together at regular intervals. That’s a definition I can embrace. It has an artistic, poetic purpose to it. My career in New York – work assignments, opportunities to join committees or not-for-profit boards, job offers – is traced and defined by my network. The network I brought with me from Toronto and the one I wove together starting as a mid-level corporate associate at Sidley Austin in 1998. New threads were introduced when I decided to pursue an alternative legal career. More cords knotted, for support and strength, when I was handed stretch assignments, changed departments and then, pursued a new career path. More threads added intentionally, older threads pulled on for guidance and some threads woven in simply for friendship and inspiration. Your network is constantly evolving (whether you realize it or not), sometimes clashing (college buddies, work colleagues, siblings, cousins….), continually growing and evolving (new clients, office mates, roommates) yet never leaving the past behind (did that old boyfriend really just send a Facebook friend request?). Get the picture? Your network is the fabric of your [career] life. Read more Pretty Young Professional Blogs: http://www.prettyyoungprofessional.com/category/blogs
