Tell Me What To Do
February 6 2010
I love Seth Godin. Why? It's the Talerman Curve (yes, 85 Broads own Elizabeth Talerman of Nucleus Branding), it's his new fabulous, personally meaningful book Linchpin and right NOW, it's his February 6 posting: The relentless search for "tell me what to do"
A brief, focused post, capturing a frustration I've had for months. Seth observes:
If you've ever hired or managed or taught, you know the feeling.
People are just begging to be told what to do. There are a lot of reasons for this, but I think the biggest one is: "If you tell me what to do, the responsibility for the outcome is yours, not mine. I'm safe."
When asked, resist.
Thanks Seth. I will continue to resist and I will now resist the "tell me what to do" with greater calm, much more grace and renewed conviction.
Take responsibility.
Own the outcome.
Venture into new waters.
Be a Linchpin.
