Women Supporting Women

July 24 2011

In June, Ms. JD celebrated the Global Education Fund at an event hosted by Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York City. 85 Broads member Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, Deputy Director of the Women and Foreign Policy Program at the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, spoke about the importance of education for women and girls.

Thanks to 85 Broads member Leena Gurevich, The Carlisle Collection, was one of the event's supporters. The Carlisle Collection was so touched by the work the Global Education Fund is doing that they are contributing a select portion of their proceeds from now until September 1 to the Global Education Fund.

“The Carlisle Collection was thrilled to be introduced to Ms. JD by one of our clients,” representative Katy Ann Lyons told us. “We were completely inspired by how Ms. JD was founded and its mission to help young women lawyers succeed in their profession.  When we heard that Ms. JD went above and beyond with The Global Education Fund, we wanted to play some part in its efforts.”

Lyons echoed the sentiments of many of our other attendees when she told us how touched she was by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon’s remarks as well as the Global Education Fund’s video. “It was wonderful to hear from the 2 students in Uganda that the GEF is supporting.  To hear in their own words, how grateful and appreciative they are of the opportunity to further their education.  These women will be the first in their families to graduate from school and to start "professional" careers.  This program is so amazing in that it will give them a chance to better their lives and to make changes in Uganda as they are dedicated to the human rights and gender equality movements” remarked Lyons.

Ms JD has a goal of raising $11,000 to support the inaugural Global Education Fund Legal scholars in Uganda. Here's how 85 Broads members can help! Contact Katy Lyons at Carlisle to book an appointment between now and September 1 - and 10% of proceeds will be donated to Ms JD's Global Education Fund.
