Cisco, Biotech Clusters & Client Service: Check Your Connections

Kelly Hoey
July 31 2010

I participated in a 2-day client symposium this week for law firm CMOs and Managing partners. A highly interactive and engaged group of professionals all focusing on what’s game-changing in client service.

In my role as President of 85 Broads, I was asked to speak on networks. I think about networking all the time as well as membership engagement, interaction and communications, however, it was good to spend a couple of weeks reflecting on the question: What’s game-changing now about professional networks?

My Answer: Connecting.

Connecting people in a professional network, connecti…

E.Forum Interview: The CEO at SXSW

Kelly Hoey
March 24 2010

At SXSW I met Alison Kramer a mom of three and owner of Nummies [nummies.com] nursing bras. Blogger, Twitter enthusiast, hot yoga addict and reluctant runner, Alison has a rather full and busy life balancing the ups and downs of running a business while being a parent. Before kids and creating Nummies, Alison was a Kinesiology graduate (never practiced) and Social Worker (barely practiced). Her company, Nummies was named for her children’s word for breastfeeding.

Busy mom, busy entrepreneur – I had to sit down and ask Alison first about her company and then WHY she was at SXS…

The Pull of Conversation vs The Push of Marketing

Kelly Hoey
March 23 2010

An email inquiry yesterday – could I connect someone with potential sponsors, donors, supporters for an upcoming benefit – has me again writing about conversation and relationship building. It’s a noisy crowded world out there, with many good, worthy causes seeking funding and sweat equity. There is no magic wand (or megaphone) to produce sponsors, donors and supporters, or to carry your cause above the crowd. The voices who will be heard will be the storytellers, trusted voices weaving a narrative that draws people in, engages them in the cause, plight or mission, encourages listeners t…

With the SXSW interactive conference starting tomorrow in Austin, social media articles, expertise and advice are flying around the internet at warp speed. Twitter exploded as a result of SXSW in 2007 – and yet, it is the social media tool many people still struggle with in terms of the how, why – really?, no way, not me…. So a few more articles to add to your reading list to finesse your use of Twitter if you’re just starting out or to refresh your memory on Twitter “etiquette” if you’ve been using Twitter for a while (and if you’re wondering where to start with Twitter, check out the …

How Well Do You Do!

Kelly Hoey
March 7 2010

I read Amber Naslund’s terrific blog entry “How I Made $100K With Twitter” today. Great title to suck you in panting “how?!???” “really!!!”. Amber’s story IS about making money using the social web but it is NOT a fairytale story about how to get rich quick. How does Amber attribute $100,000 of income to Twitter? To summarize:

Step 1: She followed people on Twitter in industries that interested her – and she listened.

Step 2: Then she entered into conversations with these followers.

Step 3: Through these conversations she built relationships.

Step 4: And when it came time to tel…

When Cows Fly

Kelly Hoey
March 1 2010

Oh, to have had a crystal ball back in 1994 or 1995…Clifford Stoll’s commentary on the future of the internet (The Internet? Bah!) in Newsweek (February 27, 1995) [newsweek.com] is mildly amusing when read today (“The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works.”). And as for how we’re using the internet for establishing business relationships (yes, Clifford, there is human contact on the internet), Kevin O’Keefe starts one of his bl…

Respect Your Audience and Know Your Venue

Kelly Hoey
February 27 2010

I’m not a fan of auto-updates. My active online communities – Facebook, 85 Broads, Linkedin and Twitter – are very different venues and how I choose to communicate varies with each. No, I’m not suffering from multiple personality disorder! I’m being authentic, being “me” on each site. I’m focused on being responsive to each of my audiences as well as focusing on the subtle nuances of each social networking site. What I tell my friends on Facebook (former co-workers, friends scattered across the globe) frankly, may not be of interest to those I connect with on the Twitter cocktail circuit …

Stop Tweeting!!!

Kelly Hoey
February 23 2010

Scott Stratten has me thinking this morning. Scott’s @unmarketing on Twitter and he’s an expert in viral, social and authentic marketing – “unmarketing” as he calls it. The title of his blog post this morning is “What if I didn’t use Twitter?”

Well, what if?

There are likely lots of other tasks, busy-work, real-work, pastimes, hobbies, I could list to fill in for the time I currently spend on Twitter.

Better (and real) question is the ‘what if I wasn’t on Twitter’…. Like Scott, when I think of the insights I have gained, the speed of information shared and commented upon, the peop…
