LEADERSHIP WEEK, DAY 3: Time Management

March 31 2010

by Lauren DeVestern, Rebecca Lasky, and Malu Gatto

Why is time management important? Bad time management can lead to stress, unhappiness, and failure. The better we manage our time, the more likely we are to accomplish our goals, succeed at what we do, and find time for the things we love. Below are some quick tips, fun quotes and other links to help you improve your time management!

QUICK TIPS:

1. Set Realistic and Specific Goals
Having specific goals motivates us to manage our time well. Whether you set a long-term or short-term goal, make sure they are both realistic and specific!

2. Learn to Say “No”
This is an easy one yet hard for many of us. We don’t want to be perceived as mean or rude, but the fact is there is only so much we can reasonably handle at once.

3. Make Prioritized To-Do Lists
Prioritized To-Do lists are essential if you want to overcome a heavy workload and not forget anything! Why not try something new? A 4-Quadrant To-Do List can help you avoid wasting time on unimportant tasks. A 4-Quadrant To-Do List has two rows (Important and Not Important) and two columns (Due Soon and Not Due Soon). At the intersection of Important & Due Soon is priority level 1, Important & Not Due Soon is priority level 2, Not Important & Due Soon is priority level 3, and Not Important & Not Due Soon is priority level 4.

4. Stay Organized!
If you are organized, you will spend less time searching for lost or misplaced items and documents. Did you know that Americans waste more than nine million hours each day looking for lost and misplaced articles?!

FUN QUOTES:

“Time is money.” -Benjamin Franklin
“Failing to plan is planning to fail. Plan each day, each week, each semester.” - Randy Pausch
“Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.” - William Penn
“Never leave ’till tomorrow that which you can do today.” - Benjamin Franklin
