Unsustainable Complexity

Mary Mavis
May 21 2012

I’ve been reflecting on my clients’ organizational complexity and looking at my own little world of complexity. And, I’m pondering two questions:

  • What part of the complexity is simply reality (the way it is)?
  • What are we/am I creating (we could stop or change it)?
  • The world and people are complex. And, complexity is not necessarily bad (check out my pic for today). But the degree of complexity feels to many of my clients...

Appeal to the Elephant for Change

Simplifying what is required to orchestrate a complex change process is quite a feat. Getting people behind the more-than-stretch goals for which you have made a commitment to the board can be equally challenging.

When we meet resistance, in whatever form it takes, we (humans) tend to speak louder and demand everyone to see it our way. Get on board, ladies and gentleman!

    April 2 2012

    Mary Mavis
    February 14 2012

We were in Brooklyn this weekend and went to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) to see La Traviata. The opera was wonderful. The music, the voices, and even our fairly last-minute seats in the last row of the balcony were fabulous. The only negative experiences were with some of the patrons.

Quick context for this post: I am getting ready to launch a series of interviews with Dr. Herbert...

    The Hardest Question

    Mary Mavis
    January 30 2012

Have you ever set your goal or intention, charged ahead, and then suddenly stop at a brick wall that appears in front of you? The wall is big and tough, and you ask,

    "Why is this so hard?"

    "How is it possible?"

    "What is this chaos about?"

Frustration, second-guessing, and anxiety move in.

And when you slow down your own insane internal dialogue, you are left...
