Where have all the Studio Art Majors gone?

July 11 2011

While sitting in my living room with my mom today, I went online and began browsing different art galleries and museums in the Boston area for possible job opportunities. I just graduated from Wheaton College (MA) with a Bachelors degree in Studio Art.  Since graduating in May, I've been doing research to try to figure out what my best career options are.  Ultimately, I'd like to stick with what I do best, what I love, and what I am so passionate about….to paint and produce all different types of artwork.

One day while sitting with my 21 fellow Studio Art majors in our last Senior Seminar review class, my Professor asked everyone what they thought they would be doing post graduation. To my surprise, only two of us replied that we wanted to continue developing out talent, style, and portfolio as working artists. One of my good friends whose painting style is so elegant and yet simple (and and who surely could become the next Wolf Kahn) replied that she would not be able to continue with her painting due to financial constraints and limited job opportunities in the arts. Another one of my classmates decided to pursue a career in law rather than art because she perceived that the latter path would be a more lucrative one. I know people can’t always have (or find) their dream jobs or dream careers but I wish there was a way for more young artists to make working as an artist a career reality.

Everyday, my mom and I bounce around ideas (she's a serial entrepreneur) and yesterday, we came up with the idea of creating an online community for Studio Art majors and recent post grads to showcase their artwork, chat with other artists, and hopefully, find the inspiration and the opportunity to continue to do what they do best — art!
