Change is Mind-Game!

April 7 2010

Change is an essential element of life, yet we almost instinctively resist it. Change requires more than just thought; it requires ongoing attention and perseverance. To deal effectively with change you cannot avoid it or let it upset you. Instead, you have to learn how to deal with change, and use it to your advantage.

Change is much harder than we think, it is not driven by our surrounding but by our mindset. Mr. David Rock, coaching expert, stated in one of his articles that "Our brain conducts strong negative activities when posed with "change." This distracts our attention, and overpowers rational thoughts. It takes a strong will to push past such mental activity."

So the trick to adjust to change is train your brains, make it think in the direction of the change. Move the "change element" from the working memory of the brain (what we always use-short term memory) to hardwired memory of the brain (long-term memory).

So how do we do this?

First be calm and think positively this is the first step to change. The brain function more effectively when it is in state of order than in chaos. Replace your negative self-talk with positive one-for example I cant deal with this change start saying I can deal with it, all I need is some help. This mindset change will help us deal with the change positively, make us more productive and ultimately we will love what we do.

Second be enthusiastic and persistent- It is not easy to hard-wire things into our brain. It took us years to learn our first word, however to reach this level knowingly or unknowingly we were enthusiastic and persistent in our approach.

Finally believe in yourself and know that life is what you make it. You have all the winning card, but you need to play them right!
