Little things matter more

Recently I read an awesome book “The Little BIG Things: 163 Ways to Pursue Excellence” by Tom Peters. This book was very insight and it stated that EXCELLENCE is the result of many small tasks.
Small favors, small gestures and even a smile can go long way in life. One of my ex-Sr. Director remembers me from my first job as “Million Dollar Smile” girl.
What are some of these little things?
1) Remember Names- Name is the most important thing to a person. Take your time during introductions. Make an extra effort to remember names and use them frequently. People will pay more attention to your conversation.
2)Be a Listener-Listen more than you talk. Stay focused on your conversational partner by actively listening and giving feedback. This gesture makes other feel that you value them and they will respect you even more.
3) Be enthuastic – This not only makes you a positive person but also cheers up people around you. This also helps to ease the nerves when someone is presenting or having a bad day. This person will remember you forever for making their day.
4) Courteous and Fair- Work life is getting more and more difficult and competitive. Mr. Peters said “Life is about remembering the simple things your grandmother taught you, getting through the day, and helping others get through the day.”
5) Be Appreciative – When someone hands over their business card, consider it like a gift and value it. Be thankful and appreciative of someone’s time and knowledge. Your body language and vocal appreciation with specific examples goes a long way in showing the you care and you are genuine.
6) Be Personal- In the era of iphone and internet, we have forgotten the value of meeting people in person. Mr. Peters said that “You have to purposefully expand your circle and engage people with different perspectives”. He continues stating that “Find excuses to get together, and never waste a lunch.”
Go an extra mile it could make a difference to your career!
