The Difference Between Noble and Ignoble Failure

Caroline Dowd-Higgins
August 9 2010

While I was researching the concept of failure, I came across a fascinating article by John J Sviokla who pens the blog Daily Innovation. John shared his insights about failure, accountability, and how it impacts the workplace.

Dave Pottruck former co-CEO at Charles Schwab was fired in 2004 because he did not turn the company around fast enough after the dot com downturn. Needless to say, Dave understands risk and its consequences. Dave is a very wise man and has illustrated the different kinds of failure relevant to a work environment. Here Dave defines a Noble Failure for a team or …

Why is Career Change So Challenging, and What to Do About It

Kathy Caprino
May 19 2010

by Kathy Caprino

In preparing to launch my new summer Career Change teleseminar program – Change Your Career—Change Your Life! – I’ve been thinking about why it’s so hard for many midlife women to find — and maintain — a joyful and successful career, and why it’s so challenging to shift out of one career into another, to a more fulfilling path.

In my personal experience, there were some very heavy blocks that kept me from realizing with clarity and confidence that I wanted out of my corporate marketing career, and from taking forward-moving action to get out.

My blocks were:

1) Ti…

It's All About the Connection

Kathy Caprino
May 12 2010

Well, my 30-Day Twitter Experiment continues and it’s been quite enlightening and surprising so far – and tiring! More than I imagined.

Here’s what I’m learning:

1) It’s all about the connection. What do people want more than anything in life? To be valued, liked, appreciated, understood, recognized for who they really are, and to not feel alone. Welcome to Twitter. It’s all about real connection – conversing, supporting, laughing – being real.

2) Drop the façade – there’s no time to keep it up. On Twitter, if you want to build community and create true connection, there’s no ti…

To Dare Greatly

Betsy Massar
April 12 2010

Many of the results are in. Most aspiring MBA students who submitted applications this season know where, and if, they are going to business school. Some students will not get their wish – they will have applied to one or many schools, and were not admitted anywhere.

I believe that the act of applying is worth applauding. It’s a complex project, practically requiring a Gantt chart for project scheduling: take GMAT course, take GMAT test, visit schools, write essays, request transcripts, get recommendations and follow up, follow up, follow up. For those who really put their all into it, y…

are you positively addicted?

Danielle LaPorte
March 11 2010

So here’s my new favourite concept: positive addiction. I just love the sound of it. It’s righteous and honest … a great combo. “I’m hooked, but it’s all good. No, really. I’m addicted, but it is positively healthy.” Like it.

I was talking to a friend today (okay, it was my shrink,) about my almost, no my definitely insatiable need for the entrepreneurial rush. “It’s a total high for me.” I explained. “Going from zero to sixty. I mean, the very definition of velocity makes me horny {distance over time.} I love having an idea when I’m walking the dog late at night and then in about six w…

2020 Vision

Cindy Cornell
March 11 2010

What is it that you can do TODAY, that’s going to set you up for success in ten years’ time? That’s both a big question and a small one. The big one is all about having vision. The answer to the small question becomes easy once you know what you’re looking to invite into your life.

First, let’s talk about what it means to have a vision. Think about the future, say the year 2020, and create a vivid mental image about your life, your business, your relationships, whatever is important to you. Make sure that you can get excited about it, remember it easily and do think about the details…

How you can benefit from an Exective Coach

Erica M Rivera
November 30 2009

Everywhere I go people show a desire to connect. I hear it at a networking event, training program, online, off-line.

They want the human contact, they don’t just want to be on the computer, learning at a webinar, chatting in a chat room They want the one-on-one, they want to be in a relationship with others. They realize the power of relationships, but they’re not attending networking events and are often overwhelmed by all of the social networking sites online. They’ve heard that route ‘doesn’t really work.’ Instead, they report that the networking sites are a way to ‘gather’ contac…

What Shapes our lives? Something to chew on...

Malcolm Gladwell’s new book – Outlier
“As Gladwell told Jason Zengerle of New York magazine: “The book’s saying, ‘Great people aren’t so great. Their own greatness is not the salient fact about them. It’s the kind of fortunate mix of opportunities they’ve been given.’ ”” NYT

to begin with – what a complex and rich topic? opportunities, or individual traits or society – what shapes individual success? as you would agree, it is not an either – or discussion. our lives – a tapesty of experiences that we have – across time – is limited/shaped by our inner/outer realities and personal abil…
