Being a Mom

July 19 2008

I have two great kids. Meredith is 19 and is just spectacularly beautiful. She is also funny and thoughtful and generous. No mother could ask for a better daughter. I love hanging out with Mer because as I've said to her throughout her lifetime, she is my sunshine.

Right now we are working on a new website called "Mer's Closet." Mer is a clotheshorse-- everything looks gorgeous on her. She has accumulated many outfits since going off to college so together, we came up with a great idea. Mer is going to auction off her dresses, shoes and bags and donate the proceeds to the 85 Broads Foundation and to other charities of her choice. We will let you know when the website officially launches!

Christopher (who Mer and I call "Criff")is 17 and today is heading off to Zurich to play in the World Junior Squash Tournament. He is an amazing young man, is as funny as his sister, and loves goofing on me. He calls me a lot of very interesting names -- this tradition was passed down from my family -- I don't think my brother, sister, or I have ever actually addressed each other by our actual first names.

Criff says "love you momma" about 20 times a day. I am definitely going to miss hearing that when he goes off to college in another year. He is going to Dartmouth when he graduates. This past 6 months were exhillerating as we had so much fun trying to figure out how to manage the whole college admissions/recruiting process. Criff was lucky as he was heavily recruited by several schools because, as I like to say, he is one "dandy little squash player."

I often hear horror stories from people who say the teenage years are terrible -- that kids binge drink, take drugs, hang out with the wrong people, and become moody and disrespectful. Nothing could be farther from the truth. These are the best years to be a parent. This is when your kids are excited about life-- they're finding their first serious love, their driving, their learning, and most of all, they're grateful to have someone in their corner, cheering them on every step of the way.

I just wrote Criff a little note to put in his suitcase. I reminded him to laugh out loud and make his own fun and to remember who loves him. I also included pictures of Mer, his girlfriend Ali, and our two dogs -- Wally and Sadie. And there's one of me and Criff when he was about 6. It is a picture of the two of us sitting under a big tree-- Criff has the happiest look on his face because he is my son and I am his mother.

No one on the planet is luckier than me.
