Lex on Lex

February 15 2008

A very funny thing happened the other day. I was meeting Bloomberg LP CEO Lex Fenwick for lunch at Brio, a restaurant on Lexington Avenue and 61st Street. The rain was bucketing down and I was frantically trying to find the restaurant. The only restaurant I could find was “Lex Foods.” I thought okay.. are Brio and Lex Foods the same thing? Or maybe Lex has his own restaurant?

It turned out that Brio was next to Lex Foods but had no signage.. just a door.
A few minutes later Lex arrived. He is very tall, very handsome, and very suave. And he has a really cool British accent.

We had a great conversation about the markets and what was happening in the wonderful world of Bloomberg. I am a Bloomberg radio addict. I love listening to WBBR en route from my house to my son’s school and back. For the last few weeks it’s been brutal as the markets have been getting hammered.. particularly the banking sector. Today, UBS forecast the banks would take another $203 billion hit from subprime mortgage losses. That is a lot of money. I need a bracelet that says WWWD? Right now the Oracle from Omaha is making a lot of people in the bond insurance business crazy.

So why was I having lunch with Lex on Lex? Because he’s such an awesome guy. Lex has a very agile mind. That is clearly why Mayor Mike put him in charge.

A few weeks ago, we had an 85 Broads event at Bloomberg which was a wild success. Patricia Beard and her supersmart former brother-in-law, Anson Beard, gave a fascinating talk about the rise and meteoric fall of Phil Purcell at Morgan Stanley. Patricia recently penned a new book called “Blue Blood and Mutiny.” It’s definitely worth a read as she really nails the culture of Morgan Stanley – obviously with some terrific insights from Anson.

I recently got Bloomberg trading screens which I’m hoping will make me a much savvier investor. I love the Bloomberg tag line… “you’re either in front of a Bloomberg or behind.” That is SO league!
