2020 Vision: Here's mine

Janet Hanson
March 8 2010

We had a fabulous 85 Broads event at Hult in Cambridge on Thursday night. Got to meet some terrific MBA students and reconnect with some of our great members including Kathleen McQuiggan, Katherine Huang, Tara Faulkner, and Julia Yao Cooper. Hult is a little gem and if b-school is in your future you should definitely check out their program.

I also spoke at Tim Butler’s “New Path” program at HBS on Friday — was thoroughly jazzed by the women I met there and think Tim’s CareerLeader model is amazing.

I am always energized when I get the opportunity to speak and am more convinced th…

Today I'm only going to thank 2 people... Courtney Smith Rae and Meg Berte Owen

Janet Hanson
October 16 2009

Today I am going to thank Courtney Smith Rae for introducing me to Meg Berte in 2003. We had coffee in Grand Central. Meg and I compared cancer war stories. Her story made mine sound like a bad hair day.

Six years ago, almost to the day, Meg wrote me this email:

After I “survived” I had three years of hell (and this was AFTER the treatment). My intestine was mangled, I lost 30 pounds and the doctors didn’t know how I might be able to keep food down — I couldn’t get surgery to repair my intestine b/c of all the chemo. Then, one after the other, both of my lungs collapsed when I was a…

THANK 10,000 WOMEN

Janet Hanson
October 14 2009

In honor of my daughter’s 21st birthday, I am going to thank 5 great women every day until I reach 10,000. This will take a few years to do but what a great way to start the day! I want to thank women who are rocking the world for other women — women who have the guts, the passion, the drive, and the talent to blaze new trails for themselves and for other women to follow.

The first 5 women on my list are:

Meredith Hanson: Mer is my golden sunshine. She is a brilliant young artist and defines the word “trailblazer.”

Patty Tiebout: Patty celebrated her 82nd birthday by waterskiing…

25 and Unemployed: How Generation Y Women Are Coping with the Recession

Janet Hanson
September 16 2009

Check out this article by Joseph Hooper at ELLE on September 14, 2009 (link at [elle.com]):

“I have this vivid memory of that Sunday,” Laurie Barnett, tells me over the disco music pumping into the midtown Manhattan restaurant where we meet, “when everyone figured out that Lehman was going bankrupt and Merrill was merging with Bank of America, and everything basically went to shit.” It’s hard to picture Laurie, 25, athletic and tomboyishly pretty, being a casualty of anything, but, as she’s eager to tell me, she was present at the …

Watch Jacki’s fabulous video on CBS Evening News: September 10,2009

This is both timely and thought provoking. Wall Street needs more smart women in executive positions. Period. End of story!

Leadership
How To Take Smart Risks
Sara Eckel, 08.19.09, 6:00 PM ET

Shortly after last year’s economic crisis hit, many experts on Wall Street and in academia speculated about whether the meltdown might have been averted if more women held decision-making positions in the financial sector. The argument, which was reported in ForbesWoman and other publications, went that because women tend to be more cautious and conservative, they might not have taken the disastrous risks that their male counterpart…

The Road Less Traveled: Kelli Sargent

Janet Hanson
August 20 2009

I wanted to share what new 85 Broads member, Kelli Sargent, wrote in her application for membership. As I love to say, it doesn’t get any better than this. For more information about RUN FOR HER, go to [runforher.com].

MAJOR MILESTONES OR TURNING POINTS:

Creating RUN FOR HER which was my Master’s thesis. When my mom was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, I learned there is no test to detect the disease and very little awareness about it so I wanted to create an event that would raise money and awareness while at the same time I could honor my mom for being the tremendous hero and pers…

Mareza Larizadeh -- Superstar Founder of Doostang

Janet Hanson
August 12 2009

Here’s why I’m so lucky to know so many superstar young women through 85 Broads. In 2005, Stacey Borden interned with us in Greenwich. She was the President of Harvard Undergraduate Women in Business (HUWIB) and her energy and enthusiasm were absolutely off the charts.

Stacey just completed her first year at Harvard Business School and is working on launching ChickRx, a fantastic new site with great medical info and content for savvy young women.

When I wanted to reach out to the top folks at Doostang, I emailed Stacey who I remembered knew some of the guys who had founded the company…
