WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2009 – They came to honor a loved one, to celebrate survival and to make an impact in the fight against breast cancer, both here in the Washington, D.C. metro area and across the globe. In the end, nearly 45,000 people participated in the 20th running of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® in Washington, D.C., which was rebranded as the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure® this year to highlight the growing breast cancer crisis worldwide. And in spite of the economy, today’s event raised $4.3 million to fund breast cancer programs for the medically underserved throughout the National Capital Area and abroad.

In addition to the name change, today’s Komen Global Race incorporated a new look, feel and Race day experience, aimed at creating a more personal, educational and interactive event. The morning’s festivities, emceed by CBS’s The Early Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez and WUSA’s Andrea Roane, opened with a parade of more than 3,600 breast cancer survivors, including 21 survivors from 18 countries, who marched into the mall between twin stages to a live performance of “Pink Warrior,” an inspiring new song by singer/songwriter Candy Coburn.

Dr. Jill Biden, a long-time advocate for breast health education and wife of Vice President Joe Biden, thanked participants, telling them that they are “paving the way for a breast cancer-free world through their efforts.”

Following Dr. Biden, Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, who founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure more then 27 years ago as a promise to her sister Suzy, who died of breast cancer at age 36, charged up the crowd with her inspirational story and a call for each participant to find a way to make an impact on this deadly disease. “Without a cure, in the next 25 years, an estimated 11 million will die from the disease worldwide. That’s more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. We can stem the tide of the growing crises; we can share what we have learned; we can end breast cancer forever, all around the world. And with each of us doing our part, we will.”

The emotional opening program concluded with the “Ceremonial First Steps” taken by Dr. Biden, Ambassador Brinker, HRH Crown Prince Alexander II and HRH Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia, Komen president and CEO Hala Moddelmog, actress and Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure ambassador Sarah Chalke, and Komen’s 2009 Survivor of the Year Sara Fought. Adding to the impact of the ceremonial first steps, Komen Circle of Promise Ambassador and singer Lalah Hathaway performed a tribute to the runners and walkers. The opening ceremony climaxed with the placing of a seven-foot pink globe, symbolizing the organization’s worldwide commitment to a cure, on a platform above the starting line.
Finally, in a partnership with MGM studios, the Pink Panther started the Race, unleashing the throng of runners eager to make their impact. After the Race start, the Pink Panther spent the remainder of the morning with Kids for the Cure®, Komen’s special Race day program for children ages 5-12.

Thanks to the Global Race, Komen is able to impact the lives of breast cancer patients in the National Capital Area as well as women across the globe. Up to 75 percent of Race revenue will stay in the D.C. area to address breast cancer disparities for the medically underserved. Thanks to funds raised by the 2008 Komen National Race for the Cure, Komen was able to invest $3.7 million this year to fund community health initiatives that address unmet breast health needs in the Washington, D.C. area, which includes parts of Virginia and Maryland.

The remaining 25 percent will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Global Promise Fund, which addresses breast cancer incidence and mortality outside the United States with culturally sensitive education and outreach programs.

Nancy G. Brinker ignited the global breast cancer movement 27 years ago by promising her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died at age 36 of the disease, that she would put an end to the shame, pain, fear and hopelessness caused by breast cancer.

In 1982, Ambassador Brinker with a handful of dedicated friends founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in her sister’s memory. At that time, there was an enormous stigma around breast cancer—newspaper editors told her they would not print the words “breast cancer,” no one talked openly about the disease, and there were few, if any, support groups. Few treatment options existed for breast cancer patients and hardly any researchers focused on the disease. Within a few years, Ambassador Brinker, who led a relentless, one-woman breast cancer information and awareness campaign, succeeded in breaching the silence surrounding the disease, fundamentally changing the way it is talked about and treated. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is now the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.

A year after creating the organization, Ambassador Brinker started the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, the most successful fundraising and education event for charity ever created. Additionally, she pioneered cause-related marketing, which has enabled millions more people—from top executives to everyday consumers—to join the fight against breast cancer. Her unwavering advocacy was instrumental in the development of many new treatment options and a higher quality of life for patients diagnosed with breast cancer as well as long-term survivors. To date, Komen for the Cure has played a role in every major advance in breast cancer and is now the world’s largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer.

Ambassador Brinker’s determination to create a world without breast cancer is matched by her passion for enlisting every segment of society to participate in the elimination of this disease. She continues her mission to ensure that everyone, from United States presidents and members of Congress to global medical experts and social leaders understands and addresses the heavy toll breast cancer takes on our society, our families, our economy and our future. An outspoken champion of all people with breast cancer as well as those who are at risk for developing the disease, Ambassador Brinker takes her cause and her passion all over the world, seeking the fresh input and international partnerships essential to ending breast cancer forever.

Globally known as a change agent, Ambassador Brinker was appointed by the World Health Organization as G oodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control in May 2009. She was included in TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2008, and that same year, President George W. Bush appointed her to The Kennedy Center Board of Trustees. She served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary from 2001-2003 and most recently served as U.S. Chief of Protocol from 2007-2009 where she was responsible for coordinating ceremonial events for visiting heads of state as well as overseeing all protocol matters for Presidential or Vice Presidential travel abroad.

Ambassador Brinker has received numerous accolades for her work, including the prestigious Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service, the Trumpet Foundation’s President’s Award, the Independent Women’s Forum Barbara K. Olson Woman of Valor Award, the Champions of Excellence Award presented by the Centers for Disease Control, the Porter Prize presented by the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, the Forbes Trailblazer Award, Ladies Home Journal’s 100 Most Important Women of the 20th Century and Biography Magazine’s 25 Most Powerful Women in America.

Hala Moddelmog, president and chief executive officer, joined Susan G. Komen for the Cure in September 2006. As CEO, Ms. Moddelmog is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s management including budgets, forecasts, managing business units including the Affiliate network, policies, procedures and compliance, and the development and successful implementation of the organization’s objectives and strategies to eradicate breast cancer. She works closely with Komen for the Cure volunteers, staff and the board of directors.

As a 6-year breast cancer survivor and former Fortune 500 executive with a passion for championing women’s issues and community engagement, Ms. Moddelmog’s commitment to the organization’s mission is fueled in her belief in the power of hope, the strength of survivors and the belief that breast cancer can be eradicated. She embraces the core principles of the organization, which engage the power of the individual—recognizing the extreme value of one and the dynamic force of many working toward one cause.

Prior to joining the Komen, she served as founder and CEO of Catalytic Ventures, a private equity firm that consulted and invested in the food service industry. She was the first woman in corporate America to lead an international QSR brand in 1995 when she was named president of Church’s Chicken, a division of Atlanta-based AFC Enterprises. She subsequently led Church’s to record sales and profit performance. She also held executive management and marketing positions at Church’s Chicken, Arby’s Franchise Association and BellSouth.

Ms. Moddelmog has served on the boards of Leadership Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Foundation, the B.B. King Museum Foundation and Women Looking Ahead magazine. She is a recipient of the Women’s Foodservice Forum Emerging Leader Award, the International Franchise Association Bonny LeVine Award, the Restaurant Hospitality Rising Star Award and the Roundtable for Women in Foodservice Pacesetter Award. In 2003 she received the Women of Achievement Award from the YMCA of Greater Atlanta.

Ms. Moddelmog earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Georgia Southern University and a master’s degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Georgia.

Alexine Clement Jackson chairs the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® board of directors as it governs the world’s largest breast cancer organization in fulfilling its promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

A 23-year breast cancer survivor, Jackson has been a long-time advocate and public spokesperson for cancer prevention, early detection and quality health care for all.

In addition to her work with Komen for the Cure, she is also a current board member and past chair of the Intercultural Cancer Council, an organization which addresses the unequal burden of cancer in racial, ethnic and other medically underserved populations. She is also a board member emerita of Prevent Cancer Foundation (formerly Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation).

Jackson also serves on the board of Strathmore Hall Music Center. She is the immediate past president of Black Women’s Agenda. She recently retired from of the board of The National Museum of Women in the Arts after 12 years of service and is a recent past chair of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region. Jackson served a five-year term as National Board President of the YWCA of the USA. With the YWCA, Jackson was a member of the United States delegation to YWCA World Council meetings in Seoul, Korea and Cairo, Egypt and joined a 10-member World YWCA delegation for a fact-finding mission in the Middle East.

Among the several special honors bestowed on Jackson are an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters from Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga. (April, 1998); 2006 Spirit of Civic Giving Award by The Community Foundation of the National Capital Region; 2005 Dorothy I. Height Leadership Service Award at the Martin Luther King International Breakfast; 2004 Community Service award (with husband) by the Interfaith Conference of Metro Washington; 2001 Community Service award by The Black Women’s Agenda.

Jackson is a magna cum laude graduate of Spelman College . and has a Master of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the University of Iowa. She is married to Aaron G. Jackson, M.D., a practicing urologist who recently retired as Chief of the Division of Urology at Howard University Hospital, Washington, D.C. They have five adult children (one son now deceased) and 11 grandchildren.

Be among the first to support our international efforts in raising awareness about breast cancer in Egypt through Komen’s Global Promise Fund. While we have supported breast cancer education and outreach efforts in the region for several years, we are working hand-inhand with the Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt, led by the talented Dr. Mohamed Shaalan, to establish a collaborative presence for Susan G. Komen for the Cure in Cairo.

Join us as we light the Great Pyramids of Giza pink and celebrate the first Egypt Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 24, followed by the first Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Advocacy Conference on the Nile, Sunday, October 25. The Advocacy Conference will showcase women of the Middle East and North Africa who are breaking down the cultural stigmas of breast cancer. You’ll be inspired and in awe of these courageous breast cancer advocates and survivors. And, as if that is not enough, golf enthusiasts will be invited to join us for the Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament held in Cairo on October 27th!

We will also make time to discover Egypt’s rich history and culture through excursions, museum visits and cultural exchanges to help us understand the evolving breast cancer landscape in which our Egyptian friends operate. Experience firsthand how Komen listens, learns, shares and supports breast cancer education and outreach
efforts in the Middle East and North Africa.

The cost to join us is $5,000 ($2,500 of which is a tax-deductible donation to our Global Promise Fund to the extent allowed by law). Each participant is responsible for
his or her round-trip airfare to Cairo. The balance of the amount covers accommodations at the Grand Hyatt Cairo Hotel with daily breakfast, and Komen will provide all airport transfers, ground transportation and meals at Komen events while you are in Egypt. You are also invited to bring your spouse or special guest (doubleoccupancy please) for an additional $1,500.

Upgrades for a premiere hotel stay in Cairo will be offered, as will optional excursions if wishing to extend your visit like a cruise down the Nile, summiting Mount Sinai in time for sunrise, or heading to Luxor to cross to the West Bank of the Nile for a visit to the wondrous Valley of the Kings and the Colossi of Memnon. Special rates will be negotiated based on interest – more information to follow.
